I once interviewed a prominent art song recitalist, who declared to me: “The last thing I want is for a concert to be a substitute for church.” He went on at some length about the importance of entertainment, and of leaving his audience with smiles on their faces.
I found this view fascinating, since it was so opposite to my own. I was always seeking religious, transformative experience through my concertgoing when I was younger. (Of course, I was usually disappointed, but no matter.)
Now, many years later, I don’t know what I believe anymore about the concertgoing experience. I guess sometimes I’m fine leaving with a smile. Often I remain disappointed, while other times I do find religion and transformation.
